Why it matters
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, apart from skin cancer. The good news: when it's found early, it is often very treatable. Regular screening and paying attention to changes in your body are two of the most powerful tools you have.
When should you get a mammogram?
For women at average risk, the major guidelines agree that screening should start at 40. They differ a bit on how often:
| Organization | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| U.S. Preventive Services Task Force | Mammogram every 2 years, ages 40–74 |
| American Cancer Society | Option for yearly at 40–44; yearly at 45–54; every 1–2 years at 55+ |
| American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists | Every 1–2 years starting at 40 |
Signs to watch for
- A new lump in the breast or underarm
- Swelling or thickening of part of the breast
- Dimpling, puckering, or irritation of the skin
- Redness or flaky skin on the nipple or breast
- A nipple that turns inward, or nipple pain
- Nipple discharge other than breast milk
- Any change in breast size or shape
Most changes turn out not to be cancer, but every new change deserves a check.
Steps that lower your risk
- Limit alcohol
- Stay physically active most days
